Internships: Where to BeginInternships: Where to Begin

It's generally advisable to begin the internship process by working with the supervising faculty member. He or she may also be able to help you by identifying potential internship sponsors. Internships can also be initiated by you if you find an attractive opportunity and then work with a faculty member to structure the academic component.

Components and Involvement of an Internship

There are two interrelated components of an internship:

  1. The actual work experience itself, which may or may not include compensation from the internship sponsor (employer).
  2. The academic course component, which requires the permission and involvement of a faculty member to supervise and evaluate the learning dimensions of the experience.

These two components are integrated through an internship agreement and formal communication between the student, faculty member and the sponsor supervisor. The educational institution provides the agreement forms needed to set up the internship.

Faculty Involvement

All internships posted on MnITcareers.org require enrollment in a faculty-directed, academic course offered at Inver Hills Community College, Minneapolis Community and Technical College, or Metropolitan State University. Each institution has varying requirements and agreement forms that need to be completed prior to beginning an internship. Students should contact the designated internship faculty member early in the placement process for more information.

Sponsor (Employer) Involvement

The internship sponsor (employer) will make the final determination about placement for a particular position. This is based on applicant qualifications and availability, the learning objectives being sought by the applicant, and the recommendation of a faculty member.
