Active Involvement

The student-based committee is the choice for Board of Advisor members interested in developing programs and possibilities that serve MnSCU IT students and alumni of all ages and in many career phases, from just entering to mid-career.

Our four major programs, for which committee members provide counsel, direction, and ideas include online and interactive projects. In addition to attending regular twice yearly board meetings, committee members may meet with each other and the Center staff for an additional meeting or two over the course of the year.

Major Initiatives

MnITcareers.org

This site, informally called “the portal,” is an  IT job search and career development Web site specifically focused on connecting Minnesota IT employers to Minnesota IT students and alumni.

The charge for this committee is to recruit employers who will use this site to post job openings. Other committee activities include assisting in designing a process for employers to easily provide internship opportunities and recruiting mentors for students.

Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition

This national competition simulates corporate security threats. It fosters teamwork, gives students an opportunity to apply theory and skills.

As a committee members your ideas will help produce and improve this event. Additional ways to serve include finding sponsors, attending online meetings to set up Cyber Defense, volunteering as a “red team” (home team) member or finding others for the Red Team, and helping to find speakers for the February event.

Inside IT

The Center is developing three online learning modules to provide IT students with training and information on IT careers and job seeking skills.

The ideas and connections committee members offer will help develop content and locate participants to take part in student informational interviews video taped for the online module. Offering feedback and guidance during, after production, and ideas about places for IT students to network is another aspect of this committee.

Women in Career Transition

This project, developed in collaboration with WomenVenture, will provide women in career transitions with essential IT and career competencies needed for entry level IT positions.

This committee will help the Center find women active in the world of IT who can participate in our “Women in IT” networking session in November 2007 or January 2008. They will also help us connect to employers who can fill out the job skills competency survey.
