IT Workforce Summit

"Collaborating to Create a Robust Workforce"

This event will bring together representatives from the IT community and higher education to begin an ongoing dialogue on the anticipated shortage of IT workers in Minnesota.  Goals include establishing a common understanding of the nature and extent of supply and demand for information technology talent in Minnesota from now through 2014. We will also examine strategies for mitigating the projected IT workforce shortage :

The symposium will consist of four distinct phases:

  1. Review facts (labor force projections, survey findings, expert testimony)
  2. Formulate a problem statement
  3. Generate a wide range of possible solutions
  4. Identify highest impact strategies/solutions that the Center could help implement

Members of Minnesota's business and government communities and educational faculty are invited to be a part of this important dialogue.

Contact Don Lewis or Bruce Lindberg for more information.

Networking for Results

Students packed the rooms during the Center's two IT Networking Events this February.  At the events, held at Minneapolis Community & Technical Collegeand Inver Hills Community College students discovered what networking really means, practiced their skills, and met IT professionals and employers in a no pressure situation.

Bruce Schneier Presents to Full House

Even after moving the venue to a more capacious hall, the room was packed with over 200 people who came to hear security guru Bruce Schneier discuss "The Economics of Information Security - Ten Trends."

Schneier, a captivating speaker, enthralled the audience with his insights and in-depth discussion of identified trends, including the economic impact of security breaches, and philosophical wisdom that revealed who really suffers when breaches occur.

The Center and OWASP plan to co-sponsor an electric slate of speakers for 2008. Next up will be web aps security expert "R. Snake" on 11 February 2008. Stay tuned for more information.

The Center Reaches Out

2008 STEM Summit
On Saturday, 12 January 2008 Center staff Don Lewis, Helen Tang, and Michael Musa brought programming to hundreds of high school students attending the 2008 STEM Summit at Blaine High School.  Lego robot maneuvers enthralled both parents and students alike.

Attendance at the Summit is part of the Center's Outreach to K-12 strategy. Hundreds of young high school students were exposed to the world of IT, and parents and students alike went home with Center brochures and found about the Center and its programs.

Ongoing Enhancement for Students
Center staffer Kate Southwick conducted three student outreach efforts during March and April: a job search workshop at Minneapolis Community & Technical College, (MCTC), and Career Fairs at Inver Hills Community College and MCTC.
